Well, OKAY...

Mrs. Dunce was apparently disappointed that the photo I included showed none of her finery.

Of course I did it to spare her feelings, and to avoid pointing out that, though the Dunce says that her sister might have had an unusual smile as a child, we wouldn't know about the future Mrs. Dunce, since she chose not to smile for her photos. And so I offer you, the future Mrs. Dunce in her finery:

(my apologies for the photo quality; the scanner isn't hooked up, so I had to use the photograph-the-photo method.)

Sorry also for getting distract by this post and following the link it provided. Now back to my commentary.

And so. Now the photographic evidence of Mrs. Dunce's fashion at a young age...

For the sake of completeness I must point out that my own attempts to smile for the camera have been far from successful, in childhood and beyond. This even extended to "smiling practice" in front of the bathroom mirror, where I tried to develop a particularly handsome smile based on an Osmond (without success, I might add). This is one reason I have often chosen a "stern" pose rather than a "cheerful" one.

Even today I can only manage a natural looking photographic smile by making myself laugh (slightly). Or if the photographer waggles a funny puppet at me., of course.

Mom did warn me that the second photo was flattering to neither of us (though of course Heather looks so sweet). Mom is wearing the better shirt that, I think, was a Past Times pattern. Also in the close up photo I am wearing the less loved skirt with the little brown dots. The better skirt was the dark brown one. I still looked like a servant though. Sadly missing the cloak, which was the best part of my ensemble.
